‘It was just an interesting topic over a crazy beat, and who better to pull that off than Rihanna?’ Ne-Yo says.
By Jocelyn Vena

Ne-Yo and Rihanna certainly have a special working relationship. After collaborating on some of Rihanna’s most memorable hits, they came together, with the help of co-producer Chuck Harmony, for her latest single, “Russian Roulette.” But the new track, off her upcoming Rated R album, sounds very little like “Hate That I Love You” or “Take a Bow.”

Ne-Yo said Rihanna requested the song’s somber vibe. “She wanted to be dark, but not just dark for the sake of being dark,” he told MTV News. “Dark with kind of a meaning, dark with some kind of thing to it.”

Ne-Yo called the track “my first ventures off into the fictitious,” as he explained how he came up with the haunting Russian roulette theme.

“I’m listening to the track, and all I can see is Rihanna and some random person sitting across from each other at the table with a gun sitting in the middle of the table and playing Russian roulette,” he explained. “And I just started thinking, ‘What would go through your mind if you was in that situation?’ It just all started coming together, and Rihanna has never been one to be afraid to take a chance, especially with me. She’s always game to do something a little different. I played it for her, and she loved it — went in and knocked it out. The rest is history.”

The eerie ballad shows the world how both Ne-Yo and Rihanna have grown as artists, he said. And that growth stemmed from their “absolute trust.”

“I trust Rihanna to be Rihanna, and she trusts me to be me,” he said. “That’s the coolest thing about our relationship. I don’t expect anything more from her. I must say this song is a step in somewhat of a different direction for both of us. We kind of both took a chance.”

And to the fans who think the track is too dark for a club favorite like Rihanna, Ne-Yo suggests they look back into music history. “It’s definitely dark, but if you think about it, [Michael Jackson's] ‘Thriller’ was dark, but it’s one of the biggest-selling records of all time,” he argued.

“Nobody’s really going out to play Russian roulette or thinking about killing themselves or nothing like that. It was just an interesting topic over a crazy beat, and who better to pull that off than somebody like Rihanna?”

Prosecutor said it came down an issue of possession.
By Gil Kaufman

Lil Wayne arrives in court on October 21, 2009 in Manhattan

Photo: Louis Lanzano/ AP Images

For much of the past two years, Lil Wayne’s attorneys have argued that police could not prove that the weapon they found on the rapper’s bus in July 2007
belonged to him. But, in a surprise move on Thursday, Wayne (born Dwayne Michael Carter Jr.) entered a guilty plea to a class “D” violent felony of attempted criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree.

The plea brings a one-year prison term, of which Wayne is expected to serve at least eight months. The lead prosecutor on the case, Joan Illuzzi-Orbon, told MTV News shortly after Thursday morning’s court proceeding that despite a focus on the DNA evidence in the case in recent days, she did not think the guilty plea was “contingent” on the DNA.

“Possession is defined as actual possession or dominion or control. … we said it was dominion and control,” explained Illuzzi-Orbon. The latter phrase is a legal term that refers to something being available for immediate use.

In Wayne’s case, the plea means that the rapper did not admit the gun was in his hand or immediate possession, but that it was on his tour bus and within his dominion (i.e. “control”) because it was on his bus. His lawyer had argued during the course of the proceedings that the gun was not in Wayne’s physical possession, as stated by the arresting officer, which explains why the plea deal was for dominion and control and “attempted possession,” not actual possession.

Wayne’s lawyer, Stacey Richman, said, “After ongoing negotiations, he opted to take the deal to take responsibility for the situation and I think it speaks of him that he’s an individual with a strong constitution that he took that responsibility.” She again noted that the .40-caliber gun was purchased by Wayne’s manager, Cortez Bryant, who had a legal permit to carry the weapon in Mississippi.

“In the current political atmosphere and given the stance New York state has on guns, it’s a fine resolution,” Richman said, noting that in New York state a first-offense charge of gun possession has a three-and-a-half-year minimum sentence “no matter who you are.” Richman claimed that the gun laws in New York state are significantly more severe than in many other states, and considering that fact, the one-year sentence she negotiated for Wayne is a decent outcome.

Wayne had previously pleaded not guilty to the possession charges and Richman had long said that the evidence against her client did not prove that the weapon belonged to him or place the weapon in his hand on the bus. A spokesperson for the Manhattan District Attorney’s office said that evidence presented during the case showed that the weapon was not lawfully registered to anyone in New York state and that prosecutors never disputed that Bryant purchased the gun in Mississippi.

“I don’t believe this was just some random stop,” Richman said of the police action that led to Wayne’s arrest. “If he was some half-assed no-name, they would have never stopped the bus. He happened to become the most famous person in the universe independent of the trial,” she said (somewhat hyperbolically). As an example of this, Richman noted that another client of hers, rapper Ja Rule — who performed with Wayne that night — was arrested for a nearly identical charge the same evening and was held on $150,000 bail, whereas Wayne’s bail was only $30,000.

Richman said Wayne was not pressured into accepting the plea and wasn’t particularly happy about it, but felt he needed to make a choice after the lawyer explained his options to him in a case that could have resulted in a minimum three and a half years in prison. The DA’s office spokesperson said that although the charge typically carries a two-year sentence, evidence presented in the case determined that a one-year term was acceptable.

“It would have been a phenomenal battle,” she said of a potential trial, adding that the much-discussed DNA evidence had nothing to do with the decision to cop a plea. “This technology is a danger to the citizenry,” she said of the so-called low copy number DNA method, which uses sometimes miniscule amounts of repeatedly processed genetic material to obtain a DNA sample. “It is not generally accepted and their own documents noted that. It can pull up whatever DNA they can find, and in this case there were at least three contributors. There’s no way of discerning who contributed what; it’s just a mishmash of DNA.”

Richman described Wayne as a highly intelligent man of “exquisite manners” who she believes was not aware of the impact that having a gun in his presence in New York could have on him. “I don’t think that people outside of our state are aware of our gun laws,” she said. “Ignorance of these laws is no defense … but my understanding is that Cortez Bryant is one of the main guys who picks up the back-end money after shows and he had a proper [carry] permit from his state, and from his perspective he had it for protection and there was no malice intended with the gun.”

Richman said that the plea deal will not have any impact on another case Wayne is facing in Arizona — related to gun and drug possession — which is slated to go to trial in April. Wayne is due back in court in New York in December and is expected to surrender to begin his term in February.

Immigration officials detained the rapper immediately after his release from prison.
By Jayson Rodriguez

Shyne

Photo: MTV News

Shyne’s deportation appears imminent, according to a conversation Hot 97’s Angie Martinez recently had with the detained rapper off-air.

The Belize-born former Bad Boy recording artist has been held in custody by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement since completing his prison sentence on October 6 for his role in the infamous 1999 Club New York shooting also involving Diddy and his then-girlfriend Jennifer Lopez.

Shyne served nearly nine years of a 10-year sentence after pleading guilty to first-degree assault among other charges in 2001.

Immigration officials detained the rapper, and members of his camp told MTV News at the time that Shyne’s immigration status was being evaluated. Speculation about whether the rapper would be deported swirled; Shyne has been in a federal facility for weeks now in Buffalo, New York, awaiting his fate.

Hot 97 news director Miss Info reported Martinez’s conversation with Shyne’s on her Web site. Martinez said that Shyne believes he’ll be relocated soon to Belize, where he will then continue to fight for a pardon from New York’s Governor David Paterson. It remains unclear exactly why Shyne is being detained and ultimately deported as of press time.

A spokesman for the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement told MTV News on Wednesday (October 21) that Shyne was still in custody, but would not release details pending his case.

“We would never discuss any individual or group of individuals, if we had a deportation operation under way for security reasons,” Michael Gilhooly said.

Gilhooly confirmed a Shyne is being held in custody for violation of an immigration law, but he would not identify which law.

In the past, Governor Paterson stepped in to stop a deportation attempt on rap veteran Slick Rick by pardoning the England-born star. However, the “Children’s Story” MC had been free for a number of years before officials attempted to deport him. Shyne’s case differs in that the rapper was immediately detained following completion of his jail sentence.

Although the matter at hand seems to be whether a non-born resident can continue to live in this country after having committed a violent crime, immigration laws are difficult to grasp.

According to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Web site, a child born outside the country to a parent of American citizenship can become a citizen, but the circumstances around the law vary depending on birthday.

“Whether someone born outside the United States to a U.S. citizen parent or parents is a U.S. citizen depends on the law in effect when the person was born,” the information reads.

Shyne’s father resides in Belize, but his mother currently lives in the States. The rapper was raised in Brooklyn, New York, and often represented the borough in many of his songs. He reportedly is attempting to return to a living situation with his mother and grandmother.

Shyne has retained noted Harvard professor Charles Ogletree to assist him in his fight against immigration. An inquiry made by MTV News to a publicist and lawyer for Shyne has not been returned as of press time.

Fif invited the former Destiny’s Child singer to co-star at the last minute.

50 Cent

Kelly Rowland, what are you doing tomorrow? Want to get romantic with 50 Cent? Those probably weren’t the exact words, but 50 Cent and his people did give singer Kelly Rowland less than two days’ notice to be his leading lady in the video for “Baby by Me.”

50 ran into the Destiny’s Child co-founding member last Thursday, when he was presenting at the Los Premios MTV awards show in Los Angeles, and it occurred to him to snag the lovely songstress for his video, which was set to roll production on Saturday.

“This video is great,” 50 said. “Chris Robinson came up with a great treatment for it. It’s obvious I wasn’t in a hurry to make the music video until I found the right treatment, the right idea, to bring it to life.”

50 said he was dead set on having a celebrity, rather than an unknown model, star as the girl he falls in love with in the video.

“I had to find the right person to be my love interest in the music video,” 50 added. “I found Kelly. It matches perfectly. The acting in the project is great. I think when people see it, they are gonna be surprised by it.

Ne-Yo, who sings on the hook, shot his part for the video in New York on Saturday, while Fif and Rowland filmed in L.A.

“Because of the technology there is no secret,” he continued. “Right after we shot, I went in the trailer and looked on the computer and saw pictures on Twitter. Everybody will get to see it and enjoy it in its entirety when it’s done.”

‘She’s grown up a little bit and she has things that she can say,’ Timberlake says of the content of Rihanna’s new album.

Rihanna has been in the studio lately crafting her forthcoming album, working with everyone from Tricky Stewart, All-American Reject Tyson Ritter, Norwegian production team Stargate and Justin Timberlake. With fans eager for the new release, we got a few more details on what to expect from the tunes.

Timberlake spoke to MTV News Saturday at the second annual Justin Timberlake & Friends Concert in Las Vegas, and told us his new songs with Rihanna are not just a rehash of what fans heard on Good Girl Gone Bad, but instead a whole new sound for the singer.

“I think she’s got, like, a million people writing songs for her, but the ones that we worked on she’s grown up a little bit and she has things that she can say,” he explained. “So that’s what we tried to do — craft things that are that of a young woman.”

Timberlake added that because of the huge success of her last album, Rihanna wants to make sure she isn’t pigeonholed into one sound or vibe. “She broke onto the scene so hard with the last record — to have that many songs on the charts is impressive,” he said. “I think that the smartest thing she’s doing is not trying to emulate what she did but move forward … I’ve heard some of the stuff on the record and it’s awesome.”

In related Rihanna news, a rep for the singer confirmed that she shot her new video over the weekend in New York City, but declined to elaborate on concept details, title or producers for the record.

Arrest took place at 3:45 a.m. outside an L.A. nightclub on Sunday.

Stephanie Pratt

Stephanie Pratt, one of the stars of “The Hills,” was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence early Sunday morning in Hollywood.

Police said Pratt, 23, was arrested at around 3:45 a.m. outside a nightclub in Los Angeles and taken into custody, with bail set at $5,000, according to Sergeant Mark Cohan of the Los Angeles Police Department. Before her arrest, Pratt was reportedly out with some fellow “Hills” stars at Empire, celebrating Holly Montag’s 26th birthday.

Pratt was released with a ticket later Sunday morning and was not required to post bail but will return for a court hearing, according to a spokesperson at the Van Nuys Division, where Pratt was held.

Shortly before heading out to the club, Pratt tweeted, “It’s my sissy @hollymontags bday party! Just finished dinner and going to Empire but I’m pretty tired aka yes i am the party pooper :(

Cohan said that he did not know the circumstances of the arrest and could not say whether Pratt was pulled over for another violation or if the stop was DUI-related.

Pratt was arrested in Hawaii in May of 2006, along with Hannah Owens-Bender, daughter of the director of ABC’s “Lost,” for second-degree theft and drug violations.

Pratt has spoken in the past about her struggles with bulimia and self-esteem issues, as well as her battles with substance abuse.

A rep for Pratt had not responded to MTV News’ request for comment at press time.

TLC, Snoop Dogg, Ciara, Jay Sean, Timbaland also rocked JT’s all-star charity concert.
By Matt Elias

Justin Timberlake performs in Las Vegas, NV

Photo: Bryan Haraway/ PictureGroup

LAS VEGAS — When it comes to attracting big names for charity, Justin Timberlake has no trouble. Saturday night in Las Vegas saw the wide reach of JT’s star power, with a diverse lineup of artists from Snoop Dogg to Taylor Swift taking part in his second annual Justin Timberlake & Friends Concert, benefiting Shriners Hospitals for Children at Mandalay Bay Hotel & Casino. While last year’s show boasted many onstage collaborations, Justin had high hopes for this year’s event — which included the aforementioned Doggfather and country queen, plus Alicia Keys, TLC, Timbaland, Ciara and Jay Sean.

“There were a lot of acts this year that weren’t able to get here till today, so there weren’t as many collabs as I had in my brain,” Timberlake told MTV News during rehearsals. “But I think that’s always the case, it’s kind of like [when] you do an album and you write, like, 40 songs, and then 12 of them make it. … But still, just having everyone out and getting to see them do their set — there are a couple of things that have never been performed onstage. There’s a new song from [Timbaland] tonight, from his record that we did together. I think Snoop’s doing a new song from his new record. So it’s kinda cool for them too, because it’s like perfect test marketing.”

The night saw Justin wearing many hats (including a fedora) — acting as emcee, performer and maestro. He even kept the crowd updated with the Yankees/Angels score in between sets. But the fans were there for music, and they sure got their money’s worth.

Jay Sean kicked off the night’s performances, accompanied by U.K. beatbox champion MC Zani. The duo took a different take on the British singer’s current hit, “Down,” starting off with a beatbox intro and acoustic guitar, until launching into a full version of the song with Justin’s band — which served as the house band for the whole evening.

Next up was Taylor Swift, and Justin assured everyone that there would be no Kanye-style stage crashing on his watch. “Don’t worry, guys, I got security on the sides, so no one can come up and ruin her set,” Timberlake told the crowd.

As soon as Swift hit the opening notes of “You Belong With Me,” she had the crowd on their feet. Her raucous set was full of hair tosses and hip swings, impressive for the silver dress she performed in, dripping with what looked like diamonds. Her set got even more dazzling when she strapped on a shimmery acoustic guitar for “Love Story.”

Justin introduced the next artist as “one of the greatest musicians of my generation.” Alicia Keys then strutted across the stage in a stunning pair of red pumps, and took a seat at her piano to belt out “Doesn’t Mean Anything.” After the song, Alicia addressed the crowd.

“I wanna tell you a little about myself, where I’m from,” she said, launching into the hook from “Empire State of Mind” then going right into “Fallin’,” which sounded even more impressive with the house band’s backup singers. The Mandalay Bay Events Center could barely contain the energy.

For the next performance, JT told the crowd, “Ladies and gentlemen, asses up, give it up for the one and only, legendary T-L-C!” Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins and Rozanda “Chilli” Thomas’ first performance in six years sent the crowd into a frenzy, as the duo tore through a barrage of hits — “FanMail,” “Ain’t 2 Proud 2 Beg,” “What About Your Friends,” “Baby Baby Baby,” “Creep,” “Waterfalls” and “No Scrubs.” While founding member Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes is no longer with us, her presence was still in the room as her vocals were filled in by live performance footage on the screen.

The next performance brought the night’s first on-stage collaboration. After Justin got the crowd moving to “Señorita,” he welcomed Ciara onstage for “Love Sex Magic.” The crowd stayed on their feet for the rest of Ciara’s set — “Goodies” and “1, 2 Step.”

Next up was Snoop Dogg, who performed “Drop It Like It’s Hot,” “What’s My Name” and new single “Gangsta Love.” Continuing the night’s collaborations, Snoop told the crowd, “Since my homeboy Justin asked me to come out here tonight, I’m gonna ask him to come out right now.” The guys broke into “Signs,” doing a little two-step action.

Justin took the reins, jumping into a medly of “Summer” and “Chop Me Up,” with Timbaland coming out to do his verse on “Chop.” Tim stayed on stage for “Give It to Me,” which had girls spilling into the aisles to dance. The duo then broke into the brand-new song that Justin had promised, the title of which they never announced. It features an anthemic chorus with the lyrics “Turn me on now” and a breakdown that repeats “What’s your name?/ What’s your number?/ I’m glad I came, so you can take my order.”

Two hours into the show, it was time for Justin to take over. JT launched into an acrobatic mash-up of hits — both his and other artists’. It started with an acoustic rendition of “Like I Love You,” then transitioned to Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” during the “Like I Love You” chorus. Next was Kings of Leon’s “Use Somebody,” mixed with the lyrics of “Cry Me a River,” then going back to the KOL chorus. “Lovestoned” followed, blended with Coldplay’s “Viva la Vida.”

The night seemingly was coming to an end as Justin sat down at a piano for a heartfelt performance of “What Goes Around … /… Comes Around,” but although he announced it was his last song, he changed his mind.

“I’m in the mood,” he told the Vegas crowd. He shouted to his band to freestyle on the next song, and they settled on “Until the End of Time.”

The show ended just shy of midnight, capping off another successful year for Justin and his charity. Honors are especially due for Justin’s bandmembers, who spent nearly three hours on stage backing up the night’s performers.

Baby will be Weezy’s third son to be born in just over a year.
By Jayson Rodriguez

Lil Wayne

Photo: Chris Polk/ FilmMagic/ Getty Images

Lil Wayne recently confirmed in an interview with the BBC’s Tim Westwood that he and R&B singer Nivea are expecting a son.

If all goes well, the baby will be Lil Wayne’s third son to be born in just over a year. He and actress Lauren London welcomed a baby boy
last month, and in October of last year, while accepting a BET Hip-Hop Award, Wayne announced to the crowd he was expecting his first son in a matter of days.

Wayne did not provide many details about the impending birth in the BBC interview.

“Two girls pregnant at the same time?” Westwood said.
“Congratulations.”

Wayne responded “Three,” before clarifying his remark for Westwood, who thought the rapper meant he’d gotten three women pregnant at the same time.

“I mean [I'll have] three sons,” he explained.

When Wayne was asked if Nivea was expecting, he responded, “Yessir.”

The casual announcement was similar to Wayne’s confirmation of London’s pregnancy, which he also revealed during a radio interview, with Los Angeles’ Power 106.

Rumors of Nivea’s pregnancy have been rampant for months (the singer and former husband The-Dream filed for separation in December of 2007), but no official comment emerged. In a recent clip that appeared online, a visibly pregnant Nivea participated in a baby shower — judging by appearances, the baby is due soon.

A representative for Lil Wayne had no comment when contacted by MTV News; a rep for Nivea was unable to be reached at press time.

The baby will be Lil Wayne’s fourth child, although information about the children and their mothers is sparse.

In addition to his son with London and the son that was born last year (to an unidentified mother), the rapper has an older daughter, Reginae, with his ex-wife Antonia “Toya” Carter.

‘Jay, come holler!,’ Dre says.
By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Matt Elias

Dr. Dre

Photo: MTV News

Songs that leaked from Dr. Dre’s Detox recording sessions earlier this year revealed that Nas and R. Kelly are among the artists in consideration to appear on the long-awaited opus. And T.I., Lil Wayne and Drake are among the MCs believed to be ghost-writing
for the album.

But if Dre gets his way, a certain renowned Brooklyn rhymesmith will be pulling double-duty on Detox, both writing and delivering a guest verse.

“Well, actually, Jay-Z’s just been in the studio doing some writing,” Dre told MTV News on Friday while promoting his new Beats by Dr. Dre/ HP notebook collaboration. “Hopefully I’ll get him to perform on the record. Jay, come holler!”

Detox is the follow-up to Dre’s 2001 album and will complete the trilogy that began with 1992’s The Chronic.

In May, a snippet of a Detox track was released on a Dr. Pepper commercial that features Dre. The song, tentatively titled “Sh– Popped Off,” features production similar to a track that leaked in February with Tip referring Dre.’s vocals. “It’s the D.R. … Made the West side worldwide, no PR/ Gangsta-rap God, I’m the end-all, be-all/ California love from the Bloods to the C-Dogs.”

Earlier this month, Dre told ABC News he’d like to finally put the finishing touches on Detox by the end of this year in time for a 2010 release. “Hopefully, I’ll get it done at the end of this year, and we can hear it next year,” the normally press-shy producer said.
