‘The last record I made, I think I was concentrating more on spitting,’ Em says of Relapse.

If Relapse marked the return of Slim Shady and his outrageous rhymes, then the sequel is shaping up to be Marshall Mathers’ turn back in the spotlight.

In an interview on his Shade 45 satellite-radio station Tuesday night, Eminem explained the concept behind the forthcoming Relapse 2.

“[The album] is gonna be a lot different than people expect,” Eminem told DJ Tony Touch. “As far as the contrast from the last album to this one, I got a couple of tracks with [D12's] Mr. Porter, two tracks with him so far. Four, possibly five with Just Blaze. The overall basis of this record, I went back to songs that are more emotionally driven. The last record I made, I think I was concentrating more on spitting. On this album, I feel like there’s some of that, but I went back to songs with [feelings] to them as opposed to just rap records.”

During the recording of Relapse, Eminem admitted he suffered from writer’s block at times, and to return to form, he revisited his earlier style of rhyme that helped him earn his alter ego. Songs like “Insane” and “Underground” showcased his rapid-fire flow and outrageous lines. “Dre, I’m down here, under the ground, dig me up/ Broken tibias, fibias, yeah, fix me up,” he rapped on “Underground.”

“I had to get it all out of my system,” Em said of the lyrical urgency behind Relapse. “I wanted to prove to myself that I could do it again.”

Once the Detroit MC broke free from his struggles with the pen, he went on to record three albums’ worth of material. He and his camp decided to whittle the songs down to two projects. In April, the rapper announced that Relapse 2 was done before the first one even arrived. He said during the mixing process, new tracks might be added.

Recently, he’s raised his profile with a guest verse on Drake’s “Forever,” also featuring Kanye West and Lil Wayne. His standout turn on the track increased anticipation for his next album. On “Forever,” Eminem hearkened back to the “8 Mile” style that endeared him to fans with his personal tales.

The focus on polishing the second album, though, has consumed Eminem so much that he’s only made scattered appearances since Relapse debuted in May. Once Relapse 2 arrives, tentatively later this year, Eminem said he’ll decide then whether to go on tour.

“During the process of me getting sober and starting to record again like I used to, I got so excited about making music again that I wanted to concentrate [just] on that,” he said. “I started recording so many records that we thought about putting out two albums. Then that became my motivation. I wanted to stay grinding and keep making music. But the time I got engulfed in [Relapse 2], it just kind of worked out this way, where I wanted to fall back from live performances for right now and concentrate on making the best music I could make. After this record comes out, we’ll see what happens from there.”

Robotic disco song could be the single Gaga promised to debut on ‘SNL.’
By Gil Kaufman

Lady Gaga has firmly established herself as a new-millennium dance diva, so it should come as no surprise that a new leaked track (possibly from the upcoming reissue of her debut, called The Fame: Monster) has the feel of a classic disco anthem, Gaga’d for 2009.

“Bad Romance” — which leaked out on Friday (October 2), one day after her eagerly anticipated Fame Kills tour with Kanye West bit the dust — is a mixture of Gaga’s signature robotic delivery with a Cher-like sound. Produced by collaborator RedOne (the producer behind such hits as “LoveGame” and “Poker Face”), the song is similar in tempo to “Poker Face,” opening with a series of ah-ah-ahs and ooh-la-las, amid a thrumming beat and swirling keyboards.

“You know that I want you/ And you know that I need you,” Gaga coos before busting into the full-throated chorus, in which she sings, “You and me could write a bad romance … / Caught in a bad romance.” The minimal beat stays at a low boil for most of the song, rising up in an ecstatic, Erasure-esque throb during the chorus, but lacking the immediate pull of some of Gaga’s biggest hits to date.

Gaga tweeted about the song on Friday afternoon, telling fans, “leaked next single is makin my ears bleed. Wait till you hear the real version.” Earlier this week, Gaga told a San Diego radio station that she’d be debuting a new track on this weekend’s “Saturday Night Live,” where she is the musical guest.

Gaga also announced plans to go out on tour on her own next month, saying the cancellation of the Fame Kills tour was a “mutual decision” reached with West. Neither artist has spoken in depth about what caused the outing to fall apart.

The nearly five-minute-long “Bad Romance” could be found on a number of blogs by Friday afternoon, but a spokesperson for the singer declined to comment about whether the song will appear on the reissue, which is due out on November 24.

‘But I’m not taking any time off,’ singer says about her upcoming solo tour.

NEW YORKLady Gaga and Kanye West shocked fans on Thursday when they announced they’d be canceling their much-anticipated Fame Kills tour without explanation.

But on Friday at an event in New York City, Gaga, who didn’t get into specifics about the cancellation, did say that West would be taking some time off and she would be hitting the road on her own.

“Well, actually, it was a mutual decision to cancel the tour,” she told MTV News on the red carpet for the Billboard Women in Music event. “But I’m not taking any time off, so I’ll be leaving just a week later than I was supposed to on my own solo tour. It will be the same places. So I will see you guys there. I’m putting out my re-release as well — The Fame Monster on November 24.”

She added that an announcement about who will be joining her on this new trek will be made soon. As for the look of the tour, she told reporters she’d be starting from scratch.

“In respects to the creative work that [Kanye and I] did together, I won’t be doing any of the things that we designed for the tour,” she explained. “It will be entirely new, and it will be just as amazing and memorable and epic.”

Responding to 50 Cent’s recent disparaging comments calling the co-headlining trek “the gay tour,” Gaga said, “I think it’s sad — and I think that nobody in any genre of music should accommodate homophobia.”

No explanation given for cancellation of tour, which was scheduled to launch on November 10.
By Jem Aswad, with additional reporting by James Dinh

Kanye West and Lady Gaga’s co-headlining Fame Kills Tour has been canceled, according to a press release from tour promoter Live Nation.

No reason was given for the cancellation. The press release stated that refunds are available at the point of purchase, and that tickets purchased online and via phone will be refunded automatically.

Rumors about the tour’s possible cancellation have been swirling for days, largely related to the negative publicity stemming from West’s interruption of Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech at the MTV Video Music Awards last month. The tour, which West abruptly announced during a television appearance in the spring and was scheduled to launch on November 10 in Phoenix, was oddly not confirmed by either of the artists’ reps until mid-September.

50 Cent slammed the tour — which he called “the gay tour” — in an interview on New York’s Hot 97 on Wednesday, but apologized for his comments on Thursday (October 1) after a wave of negative feedback in the media.

Just last week, Gaga revealed details about the tour during interviews with Las Vegas radio station KLUC
and San Diego’s Star 94.

She said the shows would feature an unusual stage that extended from one end of the arena floor to the other. “The stage is called a traverse,” she said. “It’s something that we designed together. Instead of being on just one end of the arena, the stage traverses the entire arena. It’s not really in-the-round; it’s more of a runway. … [It extends] from one end to the other so the audience can see everywhere from 360, but it’s like a rectangular runway shape.

“We’re on each end of the stage, and I want to get to where Kanye is, which is ‘the fame,’ ” she continued. “He wants to get where I am, which is home and humble beginnings. For the whole show, we are battling each other [for their positions]. It’s been a really incredible creative experience.

“We did not do this tour for each other,” she added. “We did this tour for everybody else. We wanted to do something that no one has ever seen. We wanted our fans to feel like we were doing something special and we wanted to merge two groups of fans — two different [groups of] music lovers into one room. He’s going to play every Kanye West hit, which is a lot, one after the other. I’m going to play all my hit records which, knock on wood, I had a lot this year. And then I’m going to play all my new music and then do a ton of duets.”

Asked about how she might be received by West’s fans, she said she welcomes the potential to gain a whole new group of fans. “I make pop music and Kanye’s fans love pop music because he has changed what hip-hop means. For me, the tour is more about just bringing people together and having a big dance party. The show is a celebration of creativity, art, fashion and choreography.”

Gaga also opened up about West’s dedication to his fans, and how working with him has broadened her creative horizons.

“He’s really shown me a lot, as a friend — like creatively planning it with him,” she said. “It’s all about the fans for him. We were making the stage and he was like, ‘We can’t put these side panels here because if we [do], these people can’t see and that’s not fair. He was like, ‘I’m not selling a ticket to a fan who can’t see the show,’ and he’s right.”

Gaga also revealed that she’ll be launching her own headlining tour just weeks after Fame Kills wraps. “When I come back from my world tour, I’m doing another world tour after this, which is going to be in March of next year.”

Clip was shot in Miami alongside Drake’s ‘Forever’ video.
By Jayson Rodriguez

Birdman and Lil Wayne in the “Money to Blow” music video

Photo: Cash Money, Universal Motown

Birdman, Lil Wayne and Drake together on one track equals a multi-million dollar lineup. So it only makes sense that the trio talk dollars on Birdman’s track, “Money to Blow,” the latest single from his Pricele$$ LP, which is set for release next month.

The pricey video for the track was recently shot in Miami at the same time that the posse filmed the video for Drake’s “Forever” (from the LeBron James documentary, “More Than a Game”), which also features Wayne along with Kanye West and Eminem.

In the Gil Green-directed “Money to Blow” clip — which debuted on MTV.com on Tuesday (September 29) — Drake kicks things off, rocking an all-black outfit against a milky white backdrop.

“I am on a 24-hour champagne diet/ Spilling while I’m sipping, I encourage you to try it/ I’m probably just saying that ’cause I don’t have to buy it/ The club owner supplies it, boy I’m on that fly sh–,” Drake says in an Auto-Tuned croon.

Drake’s movements are kept to a minimum, of course; the video was shot just before he underwent surgery to repair ligaments he tore in his knee over the summer.

Birdman (a.k.a. Baby), though, does anything but stand still. The Cash Money co-CEO sways side-to-side, tossing wads of cash while standing between a pearl Lamborghini and matching Maybach.

The track first leaked online featuring just Drake and Lil Wayne, but the Drumma Boy-produced number is now firmly in Birdman’s possession as he spits, “Kept stuntin’, more money, burn it up.”

Weezy closes out the clip in money chamber of sorts, joined by his Young Money cohorts Lil Twist and Lil Chuckee.

“Well, I get paid every 24 hours, money and the power/ Come in VIP and get a champagne shower/ I don’t have to worry because everything is ours,” Wayne boasts.

‘I’m trying not to make it into a bigger deal than it already is,’ Swift says.
By Jocelyn Vena

Kanye West crashes the VMA stage as Taylor Swift accepts the award for best female video during the 2009 VMAs

Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ FilmMagic

Kanye West’s interruption of Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday remains a hot media topic, five days later. Swift talked about the issue during an interview on Ryan Seacrest’s KIIS-FM radio show on Friday morning (September 18) and was asked to talk about it a bit more than she wanted to in an interview with a Tampa Bay, Florida, DJ.

With Seacrest, Swift talked about everything from winning a VMA as a country artist to whether she’ll write a song about the VMA incident.

“Well, I think that in order to write a song about something, I have to have clarity and be completely sure, and I’m not there yet,” she told Seacrest about the possibility that she may write a song about West. (She wrote the song “Forever & Always” about her breakup with Jonas Brother Joe Jonas.)

As for the VMA win, she said she’s “really proud to bring the first VMA home to Nashville. [It's good] to know there’s a Moonman on its way to Nashville.” She also spoke about the outpouring of kindness to her in the wake of the incident.

“I got flowers from Janet Jackson!” Swift said. “It was the nicest card ever — I took a picture of it! But it was really, really nice, and everyone was really sweet to me this week.”

The interview with Seacrest went a lot smoother than one she did on Thursday with Tampa Bay radio station 93.3 FLZ. Radio host MJ persistently asked Swift about the incident after she’d answered his initial questions and repeatedly but politely asked him to move onto another subject.

“Well, you know, I think that the outpouring of love is what I focus on about that whole thing, and getting flowers from Janet Jackson is something that I never thought would happen in my whole life,” she initially answered. “Just everybody being supportive and showing love, it was really nice [to know] people I didn’t even think knew who I was were out there having my back and being really very kind to me.”

After MJ, who also had Miley Cyrus abruptly end an interview with him in June, asked about it several times, she very politely said: “You know, honestly, I’m trying not to make it into a bigger deal than it already is. It’s kind of become more of a bigger deal than I thought it would be. I would just like to move on a little bit. … I didn’t know what to think but I think we should talk about something else. It’s nothing I feel like we should talk about.”

After yet another question, she handed the phone to her rep and moved on herself — to another interview.

The 2009 MTV Video Music Awards might have wrapped, but the party is far from over. Stay tuned for behind-the-scenes updates, party reports and much more.

‘Of course it was rude because it was [Taylor Swift's] moment, but that’s the way he really felt,’ Jay says, admitting incident was ‘rude.’
By James Montgomery

Jay-Z

Photo: Bryan Bedder/ Getty Images

Jay-Z has known Kanye West for many years, so when he watched West interrupt Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech at the MTV Video Music Awards, he probably wasn’t as surprised as a lot of people.

“He’s just a super-passionate person, and of course it was rude because it was [Swift's] moment, but that’s the way he really felt. [But] he’s been that passionate from his first record,” Jay reportedly told BBC Radio.

“He used to jump on tables … I was trying to make the first Blueprint, he’s jumping on tables, rapping, and I’m like, ‘Yo, not now.’ That was just him. He’s always been that passionate.”

But while Jay may have understood Kanye’s outburst, he wasn’t about to give his producer and protégé a pass for the way he behaved during the VMAs, either. And he told him as much when the two appeared the following night on “The Jay Leno Show” (where West would subsequently offer a tearful apology to Swift for his actions).

“[I told him] I think it was rude, [and] that he has to watch his passion. At the end of the day, we’re going to celebrate him for his passion more than vilify him [for it],” Jay said. “Because his passion, which caused him to make Graduation and all these great records, is the same thing that causes him to step out of line sometimes. So as he grows, he has to learn how to balance that. And he’ll learn that in years to come. That passion right there … that wasn’t fake or staged — it was how he really felt, and it was just inappropriate. It wasn’t fair to Taylor.”

And now that West has apologized (multiple times, and to Swift personally) for his outburst, Jay thinks it’s time for everyone to move on. To him, this whole situation, while unfortunate, has been blown out of proportion

“I mean, it’s an awards show, really, and I think it’s a bit blown out,” Jay said. “He’s on the cover of every paper, he didn’t kill anybody. Nobody got harmed,” Jay said. ” I don’t think he should lay low, I think he should go on tour and have a brilliant career. It’s an awards show.”

What can the rapper do to recover from the Taylor Swift incident?
By Gil Kaufman

Kanye West at the 2009 Video Music Awards

Photo: Kevin Mazur/WireImage

Kanye West has made a habit of brash moves that some might consider career suicide, from radically changing up his musical style, to chasing avant-garde fashion and daring to buck rap’s strict macho code. But could one of his most conventional acts of rebellion — Sunday’s dis of Taylor Swift at the VMAs — turn out to be the left turn that does irreparable damage to his career?

It’s not the first time ‘Ye has bum-rushed an awards show and spouted off about a perceived slight, but the fact that he interrupted the acceptance speech by a beloved, squeaky-clean 19-year-old singer savoring her first moment in the VMA spotlight has led to a firestorm of criticism for the rapper. For his part, West has called Swift to apologize, posted two different rambling apologies on his blog (both since removed) and gone on the new Jay Leno talk show to offer a teary explanation for his actions.

But we decided to ask the experts: Will Kanye ever be able to make amends to the public for this incident? (Head over to Off the Dome for our hip-hop team’s opinions on the matter.)

“Kanye’s taking a lot of heat and what he did was bad and disrespectful, but let’s keep it in perspective,” said public-relations expert Howard Bragman, author of “Where’s My Fifteen Minutes?”

Bragman, who consulted for Isaiah Washington after the actor was accused of using a gay slur against former “Grey’s Anatomy” co-star T.R. Knight, said there are three ingredients to a successful career rehab: “One is an apology, which he’s done like 17 times. Two is sincerity, and three is time. No matter how much you want this to go away, it doesn’t mean it is going to go away right away.” If West, as promised on Leno, goes away for a while and removes himself from the public eye, Bragman predicted the public will forget and move on to the next scandal.

“The hardest thing is getting clients to shut the f— up,” Bragman said.

Emil Wilbekin, former editor-in-chief of Vibe and Giant magazines and current managing editor of Essence.com, had a slightly different suggestion for how West could move on from the incident. “What Kanye did was actually kind of a good PR move that a lot of celebrities could take notes from,” Wilbekin said. “He came forward on Jay Leno and was really, really honest and showed his real emotions and finally said he had a problem. The public will always be more forgiving if people come out and admit their problems. Then they become a real person.”

That’s not to suggest that the climb back will be easy, though. Wilbekin said the reaction to West’s exploits — which have drawn fire from everyone from President Barack Obama and former President Jimmy Carter to Kelly Clarkson and Donald Trump — was so extreme because “he basically ruined Taylor Swift’s joyous moment. It was a huge honor for her, and he ruined her moment. Killing someone’s joy, particularly someone who is so innocent, is never a good look.”

If West had rushed someone else, say, Eminem, Wilbekin said the blowback would likely not have been as harsh. Though Kanye has ranted about everything from George Bush not caring about black people to saying he’s the next Elvis, those outbursts were about him. “Those were his business,” Wilbekin said. “This was none of his business.”

Wilbekin also suggested a simple three-step plan for West to save face and get back in the good graces of his audience and the world at large. Step one is to seek some professional help in the form of therapy to deal with the issues he has said he’s still struggling with following his mother’s unexpected death in 2007. “I think that is the biggest issue in this whole situation, that he’s never properly dealt with the loss of his mom or emotions over her death and what caused her death,” he said.

The second, and most intriguing, step Wilbekin suggested was that ‘Ye should produce a song for Swift and appear in the accompanying video. “That could help make amends and would be a great way for him to smooth over the situation,” he suggested. “Apologies are one thing, actions are another.” The step would also pave the way for the third element, which Wilbekin said is rectifying the situation with the country music world, a huge, powerful segment of the music-buying public that will definitely be looking for retribution for the embarrassment of Swift.

Though a planned tour with Lady Gaga in the fall still appears to be on, despite a suggestion on Leno that he would be taking some time off, Wilbekin said West should “definitely take some time to be reflective and sit down for a minute. Music fans are very forgiving, I think he can overcome this, but the answer is he needs to take time, get out of the scene, not be everywhere with Amber Rose, not be in every video and heal himself.

“He’ll work through this,” Wilbekin predicted. “He’s a great talent and with Whitney Houston’s problems and Michael Jackson’s death, the black music industry cannot afford to lose Kanye West.”

The 2009 MTV Video Music Awards may have wrapped, but the party is far from over. Stay tuned for behind-the-scenes updates, party reports and much more.

Cash Money artist Jay Sean says 2007 champ Weezy is ’still very hungry.’
By Shaheem Reid

Lil Wayne

Photo: Rahman Dukes/MTV

Lil Wayne became MTV’s very first Hottest MC in the Game back in 2007. Weezy — with no album, a million mixtape tracks and guest appearances and a palpable buzz as big as the Louisiana Superdome — dominated the list, beating out T.I. and the Game for top spot.

Wayne’s rhymes were out of control and his impact was downright brutal, transcending the hip-hop genre. Weezy had a moment where he was striking everyone with his music. That moment has lasted more than two years now. And as we move into the 2009 Hottest MCs in the Game list, Wayne — who placed third behind Kanye West and Jay-Z in 2008 — is aiming to get his crown back. (To see what it takes to make the list, check out our Hottest MCs criteria.)

“Cash Money is the hottest label right now, because those guys don’t stop working,” said Jay Sean, CMR’s newest find. “Birdman and Lil Wayne are still very hungry. They’re the only CEOs you’ll see in the club with their artists. Wayne makes all these hits records, and his Young Money label is blowing up as well.”

Weezy is putting together his entire package this year. To date, he’s had the biggest first week of any artist, rap or otherwise, since Usher’s 2004 Confessions LP. Weezy’s Tha Carter III still has the numbers to beat, with it’s sales of more than a million units the first week. Wayne also just broke the record take of any touring rap artist with $46 million earned during his I Am Music Tour and Young Money Presents: America’s Most Wanted Music Festival this past year. Weezy has also spread the love, introducing the world to new superstar Drake.

Now, here come the question marks: Has continuing to do so many guest appearances watered down Wayne’s rhymes? And will Wayne be hurt by pushing his new album, Rebirth, back so many times? Artists such as Jay-Z, Rick Ross, Eminem, Jadakiss and Fabolous have all had successful albums this year while Weezy’s project has been delayed. Everything will come to light soon when the 2009 list of Hottest MCs is announced.

Who do you think is the Hottest MC in the Game? Don’t forget to vote from now through September 21 to have your voice heard.

On ‘Today,’ Keys says she wishes Mama could have been ‘overwhelmed and inspired’ from her seat instead of the stage.
By Shaheem Reid

Alicia Keys on Wednesday’s “Today” show

Photo: NBC News

Lil Mama said she realized Jay-Z wasn’t feeling her stage crashing at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards. Well, guess who else wasn’t feeling that stage invasion? Alicia Keys. Keys appeared on the “Today” show on Wednesday (September 16), and when hosts Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb asked about Mama, Keys initially declined to comment.

“I’d rather not speak about it,” she said. “The performance was so phenomenal, it doesn’t matter about anything else.”

However, later in the interview the hosting duo coaxed a comment from Keys.

“We can appreciate her being overwhelmed and inspired,” Keys said, “but we would have appreciated it if she would have did it from her seat.”

But Keys had more positive things to say about the show-closing performance of “Empire State of Mind.”

“It’s phenomenal. Jay-Z and I both are native New Yorkers,” the singer explained. “It’s a classic New York song — new Frank Sinatra, Liza Minnelli. I don’t know, it’s a beautiful New York song, I love it. It’s great to perform in New York and the VMAs were in L.A., now it’s back and it’s great to perform. The whole room was crazy.”

The “Today” show hosts also asked Keys’ opinions on Kanye West’s upstaging of Taylor Swift.

“I think that obviously he knew that wasn’t in the best taste, in retrospect, and I think he realized that wasn’t quite the right thing to do,” she offered.

The 2009 MTV Video Music Awards might have wrapped, but the party is far from over. Stay tuned for behind-the-scenes updates, party reports and much more.
