‘It was just an interesting topic over a crazy beat, and who better to pull that off than Rihanna?’ Ne-Yo says.

Ne-Yo and Rihanna certainly have a special working relationship. After collaborating on some of Rihanna’s most memorable hits, they came together, with the help of co-producer Chuck Harmony, for her latest single, “Russian Roulette.” But the new track, off her upcoming Rated R album, sounds very little like “Hate That I Love You” or “Take a Bow.”

Ne-Yo said Rihanna requested the song’s somber vibe. “She wanted to be dark, but not just dark for the sake of being dark,” he told MTV News. “Dark with kind of a meaning, dark with some kind of thing to it.”

Ne-Yo called the track “my first ventures off into the fictitious,” as he explained how he came up with the haunting Russian roulette theme.

“I’m listening to the track, and all I can see is Rihanna and some random person sitting across from each other at the table with a gun sitting in the middle of the table and playing Russian roulette,” he explained. “And I just started thinking, ‘What would go through your mind if you was in that situation?’ It just all started coming together, and Rihanna has never been one to be afraid to take a chance, especially with me. She’s always game to do something a little different. I played it for her, and she loved it — went in and knocked it out. The rest is history.”

The eerie ballad shows the world how both Ne-Yo and Rihanna have grown as artists, he said. And that growth stemmed from their “absolute trust.”

“I trust Rihanna to be Rihanna, and she trusts me to be me,” he said. “That’s the coolest thing about our relationship. I don’t expect anything more from her. I must say this song is a step in somewhat of a different direction for both of us. We kind of both took a chance.”

And to the fans who think the track is too dark for a club favorite like Rihanna, Ne-Yo suggests they look back into music history. “It’s definitely dark, but if you think about it, [Michael Jackson's] ‘Thriller’ was dark, but it’s one of the biggest-selling records of all time,” he argued.

“Nobody’s really going out to play Russian roulette or thinking about killing themselves or nothing like that. It was just an interesting topic over a crazy beat, and who better to pull that off than somebody like Rihanna?”

Haunting ballad, penned by Ne-Yo, seems to refer to an abusive relationship.
By Jocelyn Vena

Rihanna’s Russian Roulette

Photo: Island Def Jam Music Group

Yes, the wait was ova on Tuesday (October 20) at 11:23 a.m. when Rihanna released her first single from her forthcoming album, Rated R. The song was written and produced by Ne-Yo, who’s worked on several of Rihanna’s hits, including “Hate That I Love You” and “Take a Bow.” Their previous efforts together have always been about the ups and downs of love, but fans won’t be able to listen to this single without thinking about her former relationship with Chris Brown.

The nearly four-minute-long song, which is available to stream on her site, opens with a searing guitar solo that transitions into a pulsing beat, which stays constant during the eerie, haunting ballad. Without saying anything literal about Brown assaulting Rihanna in February, “Russian Roulette” seems to be about an abusive relationship.

The track opens with Rihanna softly singing: “Take a breath/ Take it deep/ Calm yourself/ He says to me/ If you play/ You play for keeps/ Take the gun/ And count to three.”

The Russian roulette metaphor continues in the chorus, in which she sings, “And you can see my heart beating/ You can see it through my chest/ I said I’m terrified, but I’m not leaving/ I know that I must pass this test/ So just pull the trigger.”

In the next verse, the song’s character seems scared that the man speaking to her will always have power over her: “Say a prayer to yourself/ He says close your eyes/ Sometimes it helps/ And then I get a scary thought/ That he’s here means he’s never lost.”

Before the song ends with a gun being cocked and fired, Rihanna sings, “As my life flashes before my eyes/ I’m wondering, will I ever see another sunrise?/ So many won’t get the chance to say goodbye/ But it’s too late to pick up the value of my life.” Her voice soars into the chorus one last time.

In artwork for the single, Rihanna wears a blond, slicked-back Mohawk, an eye patch and a corset. She’s topless and tied up in barbed wire, but she looks defiantly at the camera, mouth slightly open, as she holds a chain hanging from the ceiling.

On Tuesday, Rihanna also announced that her forthcoming album, out on November 23, will be called Rated R. Def Jam also announced that the song’s video, shot by “Take a Bow” director, Anthony Mandler, will premiere soon on ABC.

“The best and safest way I can say this is that Rihanna has some stuff to say and she’s going to say it,” Ne-Yo told MTV News before the song was released. “And she ain’t going to make no apologies for it. … I’ve heard a good majority of the album … world, get ready. That’s all I’m going to say: World, get ready.”

Stephanie Pratt, one of the stars of “The Hills,” was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence early Sunday morning in Hollywood.

Police said Pratt, 23, was arrested at around 3:45 a.m. outside a nightclub in Los Angeles and taken into custody, with bail set at $5,000, according to Sergeant Mark Cohan of the Los Angeles Police Department. Before her arrest, Pratt was reportedly out with some fellow “Hills” stars at Empire, celebrating Holly Montag’s 26th birthday.

Pratt was released with a ticket later Sunday morning and was not required to post bail but will return for a court hearing, according to a spokesperson at the Van Nuys Division, where Pratt was held.

Shortly before heading out to the club, Pratt tweeted, “It’s my sissy @hollymontags bday party! Just finished dinner and going to Empire but I’m pretty tired aka yes i am the party pooper :(

Cohan said that he did not know the circumstances of the arrest and could not say whether Pratt was pulled over for another violation or if the stop was DUI-related.

Pratt was arrested in Hawaii in May of 2006, along with Hannah Owens-Bender, daughter of the director of ABC’s “Lost,” for second-degree theft and drug violations.

Pratt has spoken in the past about her struggles with bulimia and self-esteem issues, as well as her battles with substance abuse.

A rep for Pratt had not responded to MTV News’ request for comment at press time.

The clip debuts Friday night on CMT special ‘Fifteen Swiftly-Made Videos.’
By Jocelyn Vena

Taylor Swift in her video for “Fifteen”

Photo: Big Machine Records

Taylor Swift is “Fifteen” all over again in the new music video for her song of the same name. The video will make its official debut Friday night (October 9) on CMT after a special about the singer titled “Fifteen Swiftly-Made Videos.”

The 90-minute special will include Swift’s entire video collection, including fan favorites like “Teardrops on My Guitar,” “Love Story” and the VMA-winning “You Belong With Me.” It will also include performances from other CMT specials like “Studio 330 Sessions” and “CMT Crossroads: Def Leppard and Taylor Swift,” reports JustJared.com.

The “Fifteen” video, however, has already found its way online. In it, Swift, in her signature curls, a little white dress and barefoot, travels through a dreamlike montage of scenes from high school. The video also includes her friend Abigail, who much of the lyrics are about, as they go through various situations of teen life, including having your heart broken by a boy.

Throughout most of the video Swift plays her acoustic guitar, moving through fields and through various surreal scenes of high school life while singing about how in high school you think your first boyfriend is so important until you realize you want to do other things with your life. It ends with Swift in the real world, all grown up, looking at the student she once was.

Swift plans to re-release Fearless, the album that “Fifteen” is on, later this month; the re-release will include several new songs. When she originally put out the LP last November, she spoke to MTV News about how the songs were inspired by her own life.

“I like to write personal songs,” she said. “I like to write songs that are very obviously about people. It’s kind of hard to change your stripes. I like to write songs about love, and I like to write songs about relationships, and I like to write songs about boys.”

‘But I’m not taking any time off,’ singer says about her upcoming solo tour.

NEW YORKLady Gaga and Kanye West shocked fans on Thursday when they announced they’d be canceling their much-anticipated Fame Kills tour without explanation.

But on Friday at an event in New York City, Gaga, who didn’t get into specifics about the cancellation, did say that West would be taking some time off and she would be hitting the road on her own.

“Well, actually, it was a mutual decision to cancel the tour,” she told MTV News on the red carpet for the Billboard Women in Music event. “But I’m not taking any time off, so I’ll be leaving just a week later than I was supposed to on my own solo tour. It will be the same places. So I will see you guys there. I’m putting out my re-release as well — The Fame Monster on November 24.”

She added that an announcement about who will be joining her on this new trek will be made soon. As for the look of the tour, she told reporters she’d be starting from scratch.

“In respects to the creative work that [Kanye and I] did together, I won’t be doing any of the things that we designed for the tour,” she explained. “It will be entirely new, and it will be just as amazing and memorable and epic.”

Responding to 50 Cent’s recent disparaging comments calling the co-headlining trek “the gay tour,” Gaga said, “I think it’s sad — and I think that nobody in any genre of music should accommodate homophobia.”

‘Miss Acosta is still very much single,’ her manager tells MTV News.
By Jocelyn Vena

Photo: rosaacosta.com

On Thursday, rumors began circulating on the web that Soulja Boy Tell’em had gotten engaged to model/ video star Rosa Acosta — according to Acosta’s manager and a source in Soulja Boy’s camp, the rumors are false.

Acosta’s manager, Charles Garner, told MTV News on Friday (September 25) that the rumors began after the pair was seen hanging out together in photos on the model’s Web site. In the photos, Acosta is seen wearing what looks like an engagement ring — however, her manager said the ring wasn’t a gift from Soulja Boy, but her mother. A source in Soulja Boy’s camp also told MTV News that the rumors are untrue.

“So the story is that the proposal is false,” Garner said in an e-mail to MTV News. “Miss Acosta is still very much single. She was in L.A. filming the Chris Brown video (featuring Lil Wayne and Swizz Beatz) with several other models. Soulja Boy was in L.A. He’s been with friends with Rosa for awhile and asked if she and the other girls wanted to go to dinner.

“So he took her and four other girls to dinner, [during] which some playful pictures were taken as ‘behind the scenes’ for Miss Acosta’s Web site. The ring she has on her finger is a ring that was given to her by her mother about three or four years ago and it was not given to her by Soulja Boy. The picture that everyone has up is a harmless picture where he’s kissing her on the cheek. And there’s about four other pictures where you see him at the table with her and the other models and he’s hugging everybody.”

In response to the rumors, Soulja Boy simply tweeted “LOL.”

Singer had said on ‘The View’ that she hadn’t heard from him.
By Jocelyn Vena

After three public apologies, Kanye West has personally apologized to Taylor Swift for disrupting her VMA win
on Sunday Night. MTV News confirmed that Swift has accepted West’s apology, which was made on Tuesday (September 15).

On “The View” earlier on Tuesday, Swift said West had yet to contact her personally to apologize, even though he blogged two apologies and made an additional one on Monday night during his appearance on “The Jay Leno Show.” Apparently quite soon after her appearance, West called the VMA winner to apologize — and according to her reps, she has accepted his apology.

While on “The View,” the 19-year-old said that if West wanted to meet to talk about the incident she would be open to the idea, which he mentioned during his “Leno” appearance. “I mean, he has not personally reached out to me or anything,” she revealed. “But if he wanted to say ‘Hi,’ [sure].”

West had said that he was “rude” for interrupting her acceptance speech for Best Female Video. “It was just very rude, period,” West said to Leno. “I’d like to apologize to her in person.”

On Sunday night, Swift spoke to MTV News about what went through her mind when West took the mic out of her hands to proclaim his preference for Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies” video.

“Well, you know, I was up there and I was standing there and I saw Kanye up on the stage,” she explained. “I was really excited … and I kind of wasn’t excited anymore.”

‘I feel like Ben Stiller in ‘Meet the Parents,” West blogs in new apology, after removing earlier post.
By Jocelyn Vena

On Monday (September 14), Kanye West took to his blog
to issue a new apology to Taylor Swift for interrupting her acceptance speech
at the VMAs, and saying that he thought Beyoncé deserved to win the Moonman for Best Female Video.

“I feel like Ben Stiller in ‘Meet the Parents’ when he messed up everything and Robert De Niro asked him to leave,” he wrote — not in all caps, as he usually does when he’s blogging emphatically. “That was Taylor’s moment and I had no right in any way to take it from her. I am truly sorry.”

West originally wrote a longer, all-caps apology blog on Sunday night
that was later removed from his Web site. In it, he wrote, “I’m sooooo sorry to Taylor Swift and her fans and her mom,” he wrote. “I spoke to her mother right after and she said the same thing my mother would’ve said. She is very talented! I like the lyrics about being a cheerleader and she’s in the bleachers! I’m in the wrong for going on stage and taking away from her moment!”

In the removed post he did say, “I will apologize to Taylor 2mrw,” which he apparently did on Monday in his new apology to the VMA winner. In that same blog post he went on to say, “Welcome to the real world!!!! Everybody wanna booooo me but I’m a fan of real pop culture!!! No disrespect but we watchin’ the show at the crib right now cause … well you know!!!! I’m still happy for Taylor!!!! Boooyaaawwww!!!! You are very very talented!!! I gave my awards to Outkast when they deserved it over me … That’s what it is!!!!!!! I’m not crazy y’all, i’m just real. Sorry for that!!! I really feel bad for Taylor and I’m sincerely sorry!!! Much respect!!!!!”

The 2009 MTV Video Music Awards might have wrapped, but the party is far from over. Stay tuned for behind-the-scenes updates, party reports and much more.

Sparks remembers being too awestruck to talk to her future tourmate.
By Jocelyn Vena, additional reporting by Jim Cantiello

Jordin Sparks at the 2008 Video Music Awards

Photo: Todd Williamson/Getty Images

Before last September, Jordin Sparks had never been to the VMAs and had never met current tourmate Britney Spears. So, when she found out she was seated near Spears at the 2008 Video Music Awards, she knew it was her chance to speak up and have some time with the star.

First, she had to get over being nervous to be in the very presence of Britney. “Well, I didn’t say anything,” Sparks told MTV News. “I [didn't] know what to say, ’cause it was her big comeback thing. She was nominated for however many [awards], and she looked beautiful, and I was like, ‘Aaah!’ ”

Though she was starstruck, Jordin couldn’t help but feel a little jealous when Britney’s “Piece of Me” beat her “No Air” in the Best Female Video category last year. “She did [beat me], and I was very sad,” she said. “I was like, come on, she already has three of them, at least give me one.”

But Sparks’ mother wasn’t about to allow her to miss the opportunity to meet the pop princess. “My mom had to ask her for a picture,” the “Idol” winner admitted. “My mom was with me, ’cause I couldn’t do it. I was like, ‘Mom, I cannot ask her for this picture.’ ”

Sparks said Spears at first seemed reluctant to take the photo. “Then Larry [Rudolph], who is her manager, was like, ‘She’s on your label; you’re going to want to take the picture.’ And I was like, ‘Cool!’ ” she said. “And I understand too because she wanted to sit and watch. But we got to take the picture!”

The 2009 MTV Video Music Awards will take place September 13 at 9 p.m. ET. Additional celebrity presenters and performers will be announced in the coming weeks. To be the first to find out the inside scoop, follow the Inside MTV Twitter account at Twitter.com/InsideMTV.

‘They both are,’ Kevin says of whether Nick or Joe will be his best man at the ceremony.
By Jocelyn Vena

Kevin Jonas

Joe and Nick Jonas now know just who is going to be the best man at Kevin’s wedding to longtime girlfriend Danielle Deleasa. And, no, he didn’t decide to pick littlest brother Frankie.

“They both are [my best man],” Kevin said in a radio interview with Canada’s Hot 89.9FM Radio during a tour stop in Ottawa. “[Deleasa] actually has two sisters, kind of the same age as well. It works out really well because there are two maids of honor and two best men.”

Last month, Nick tried to play it cool when asked if Kevin had picked which brother was going to be his best man. But he did reveal that Kevin and Danielle were possibly planning a winter wedding. “They have not set a date yet, but I think that it’ll be sometime around the end of the year, beginning of the year — something like that,” Nick said. “We’ve talked about it a little bit [about who is going to be best man]. He’s working it all out, but we’ll see what happens.”

But Joe revealed in an earlier interview that he had his hopes set on being Kevin’s best man. “I want it. I’ll be the best best man ever,” he said, also revealing the best man plan for any future Jonas weddings. “Eventually if I get married, [the best man is] gonna be Nick, and when it’s Nick, [the best man is] gonna be Frankie.”
